The main goal of the project is the recording and monitoring of the loggerhead sea turtle nesting activity on the nesting beaches as well the recording and assessment of the mating and spatial distribution of sea turtles in the marine area of the National Marine Park of the Zakynthos. An additional purpose of the project is the assessment of the sea turtle conservation status according to the Directive 92/43 / EEC, proposing favorable reference values and conservation objectives for the area of NMPZ (Site of Community Importance - GR2210002). Within this Monitoring Project, a scientific monitoring system is implemented in order to assess the conservation status of marine turtles, in full compliance with Directive 92/43 / EEC. The results of the monitoring action are used for the design and implementation of proper management measures for the protection and conservation of C. caretta and its habitat.
As a basis for monitoring and evaluating the conservation status of sea turtles, the following parameters are considered :
- Range and distribution
- The status of the population (size, structure, population dynamics and nesting)
- The quality and condition of the habitat types for the survival and nesting of the species
- Impacts - pressures - threats (conservation perspectives)
A significant part of the monitoring activity is carried out in close collaboration with the NGO ARCHELON
