A fieldwork took place at the National Marine Park of Zakynthos Island, from 27th of June to 3rd of July, for the implementation of the project “Climate-Smart Coastal Practices for Blue governance”-BLUECOAST (Interreg IPA CBC “Greece - Albania 2014 – 2020”), by the scientists of the Laboratory of Physical Geography of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in cooperation with the Management Authority of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, which is the coordinator of the project.
The areas visited were the most important loggerhead sea-turtle Caretta caretta nesting beaches of Zakynthos, (Marathonisi, Kalamaki [East (Crystal post) and West], Sekania, Dafni, Gerakas and the scientific research included:
- Morphologic cross-sections of the subaerial and underwater part of the beaches
- Surficial subaerial and underwater sediment sample collection
- 1 meter core sampling of the subaerial part of the beach
- Surficial coastal water sampling and in situ measurements of temperature and pH.
All collected samples were labeled and packaged appropriately to be transferred to the Laboratory of Physical Geography for analysis.
The results will lead to the comprehension of the environmental characteristics of the aforementioned nesting beaches and will be published to the scientific community when available, through the webpage of the project.
