The National Marine Park of Zakythos contains a wealth of different habitats and microenvironments. As a natural result many different ecological niches are created, which are exploited in the best way by all the species of animals.
Birds
The Protected Area host a large number of bird speices (~119 ). Zakynthos and Strofadia islets fall aong a migratory paph, erving a resting sites for many birds during the spring and automn. One example of migratory bird is the turtle dove (Strpopelia turtu), will an example of a resident species is the Eleonora’ s Falcon (Falco Eleonora) a bird of prey that has not been documented on any island north of Zakynthos.
Reptiles - Amphibian
A range of reptiles and amphibians may also be found within the limits of the NMPZ. Lake Keri’s banks host several species e.g. terrapin Emys orbicularis, Mauremys caspica, frogs Hyla arborea, Bufo bufo, Bufotes viridis. The Kalamaki sand-dunes provide an ideal environment for snakes and lizards. Other species (protected by the Presidential Decree 67/1981) that have been observed on Strofadia are the Pelloponesean Lizard
Mammals
On land, Zakynthos hosts over 10 species of bats which inhabit caves, old buildings and trees, plus rodents such as hedgehogs, mice, hares and martens
