Posidonia
Ecosystems of the Posidonia seagrass beds are the "rainforests" of the Mediterranean. They are areas of very high productivity and living quarters for a large number of invertebrate species and fish. They are considered to be precaution and food fields for many fish species, including those considered as first-class commercial species when they are in young stages of growth.
After scientific research, carried out in the framework of "Natura 2000" network, extensive Posidonia seagrass beds have been identified in Laganas Bay, the presence of which is proved by the presence of large quantities of dead leaves of the Posidonia oceanica in the shores of the bay, during the winter months.
